Minutes after author Salman Rushdie was stabbed on Friday, police took a 24-year-old man into custody.

Rushdie, an Indian-origin best-selling author based in the UK, was attacked at a book event at New York’s Chautauqua Institution on Friday evening.

The incident occurred minutes after the author took his seat on stage and was about to be introduced, according to eyewitnesses.

For years, the 75-year-old Bombay-born author has been threatened with death by Islamists for writing 'The Satanic Verses.'

After publication, Rushdie's book was banned in several countries, including India, and Iran's Supreme Leader issued a fatwa against him.
